We met up in the evening to go out to a restaurant in Durlach, the Alte Schmiede. After enjoying local specialties and some good talks, we took the tram back to Karlsruhe and went to the Kap, where we spent the rest of the evening.

Friday: Travel, exploration and night out #1 (264 images in 19 chapters)

The trip started on Friday morning at the Karlsruhe train station - from where we took the TGV train to Paris. After we had checked in to the hotel, we went out for lunch in the "Rue Mouffetard", a colorful street ligned with restaurants, bars and cafes. In the afternoon, we walked towards the Seine , visited Centre Pompidou and the Louvre before heading out into the night in the 5th arrondissement of Paris.

Saturday: Sight seeing, night out #2 (129 images in 13 chapters)

We spent most of Saturday walking past some of the major site seeing locations in Paris, the Eiffel tower, the Champs Elysées with the triumphal arch, up through Montmartre to the Sacré Cœur, down back on the other side through the 10th arrondissement of Paris.

Starting at Karlsruhe main station, taking the TGV to Paris from where our flight left (which was faster than flying from Frankfurt!). After an 11 hour overnight flight we landed safely on Réunion, picked up our rental car and headed towards La Saline-les-Bains on the island's west coast where we had our apartment.

After having handed back the apartment to the landlord, we walked down to beach in La Saline Les Bains once more, and headed back to the airport where our flight was scheduled for the evening. On our way we visited the reminder of the Chemin de fer de La Réunion and Saint-Denis' downtown area and waterfront walk.

Tour de Mallorca, day 1 (71 images in 6 chapters)

We rented a car for three days from a local place in Colònia Sant Jordi - our first tour taking us through the eastern part of Majorca - Santanyí - S'horta - Porto Cristo (seeing the "Dragon Caves" there) - Cala Millor - Capdepera, and back via Artà - Manacor and Felanitx (the "x" is pronounced like "sh" in "shoe").

Our second day trip took us westward - Campos - LLucmajor - around Palma, with a stop in Peguera, and over the hills on coast road MA-10 past Andtrax towards Port de Sóller, where the historic railway coming from Palma ends.

On Sunday, we escaped the rainy morning into the Musée du Louvre. We walked through most of it, went to see the Mona Lisa (which isn't as great as you'd imagine) and browsed through an almost endless number of rooms with even more paintings and sculptures. After that, we had a very "formidable" cheese burger and french fries and headed for the Gare de l'Est, heading back with the TGV train to Germany.

We met at the Karlsruhe main station at shortly before seven to board the ICE train bound for Paris, arriving there less than four hours later and after travelling through most of France at 320 km/h.

Saturday, still feeling the long night out, we went on a sightseeing walk through Barcelona, seeing its old town (again, but by daylight), lively market halls, the port and the beach (where we stopped to relax and drink some cocktails in the sun). We did go out again in the evening - not for long though - to catch the flight back we'd have to get up at 6 in the morning.

Road trip: Santa Maria - L.A. - Las Vegas (70 images in 8 chapters)

This was the longest of our road trips, leading us from Santa Maria through Santa Barbara county southeast through Malibu, crossing Greater Los Angeles Area (with almost 18'000'000 inhabitants one of the most populous regions in the U.S.), finally turning northeast on to I-15 heading to our day's destination, Las Vegas. This last part gave us a feeling for the wide open areas in the States.

Downtown San Francisco (103 images in 6 chapters)

After arriving at our hotel in Market Street the evening before, we were too tired to really go out exploring, so instead decided to have a sandwich, watch some TV and fall asleep. The next morning, starting out with a coffee at Starbuck's, we started walking up and across Nob Hill down to Ghirardelli Square, over to Pier 39 and through the Financial District to SoMa, where we had our first burger in the U.S. inside an American Diner (what else?). It started to rain around 3 in the afternoon, so our tour stopped there and we went back to catch up some more on sleep.

Golden gate walk (87 images in 8 chapters)

The next day, I proposed to walk through Golden Gate Park and all the way over to the Golden Gate Bridge. By the time we arrived at the latter, it was all covered in a fog patch, which did make for some interesting pictures but at the time was kind of disappointing. Walking back all the way to St. Hyde Pier, we were happy to catch a cable car to Market street. We estimated later from tracing our walk on maps we had walked about 20 km.

"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!" - so goes a famous quote. On the flight towards the U.S. I had watched "The Hangover" - and it didn't get that wild for us:-) Las Vegas is absolutely stunning and it overwhelms you when you get there. You do get used to the glittering, blinking, advertising-everywhere-everything after a while thougn and it's absolutely worth a stay, even if you're not planning on gambling or getting drunk! We had a room for the weekend in the TI Hotel and Casino.

Downtown Bucharest #1 (127 images in 7 chapters)

After having partied with work colleagues from Romania at the 1&1 Winterfest in Bucharest all night, Thomas and me got up early to see some of the city: A 27.2 km walk taking us from Piata Unirii to the Palace of the Parliament, through the old town, and via Calea Victorei to Piata Romana and back towards the hotel. The last time I had the chance to see downtown Bucharest was in 2005 - see here for the pictures I took then.

The second part of our city tour on Sunday took us via University square, from where we took the metro to Aviatorilor (at Charles de Gaulle Square) to the Arcul de Triumf, through Herastrau Park to the Gara de Nord train station, and back via Piata Romana down to the Palace of the Parliament, making this 28.2 km walk a bit longer than yesterday's (just like Bulevardul Unirii, Bucharest's Champs-Élysées, which is longer than the original).

Took the train up to the top of the Bernina Pass (2053 meters above sea level) and hiked down towards Alp Grüm on its southern side. Shortly before reaching the train station there, we had a wonderful view down into the Poschiavo valley more than 1000 meters below.

Hike up to the Morteratsch Glacier through the "Val Morteratsch". Takes a little less than an hour to get there from the train stop where the glacier used to end, it has since receeded almost two kilometers.
